Yesterday the Wake County Schools board approved transitioning 19 elementary schools to a year-round calendar. This will allow for 3,000 more students in addition to the new building program. This year the Wake County School system has over 7,400 more students than last year. Similar enrollment growth is projected for next year.

In addition to elementary schools going to year-round schedules, the Wake County School Board is considering the potential of converting East Garner, East Wake, Leesville, North Garner, Salem and Wakefield Middle Schools to a multi-track year-round calendar.

As I have written in a number of previous blogs, the Raleigh Area of North Carolina is growing rapidly and with that growth there are challenges to the area school systems. In fact, Wake County is the fastest growing county in North Carolina.

To address the issue of growth in the school system, a bond issue is on the ballot this November 7 for $1.056 Billion in capital improvements. To explain and support the bond issue Wake County Schools has established a new section of their website titled, “Blueprint for Excellence”.Â

The website contains a special report on growth, FAQ’s, and information on existing schools that are scheduled for major renovations, and lots of links to school information including video. See the website at: Blueprint for Excellence

The Raleigh Area of North Carolina is growing rapidly and with that growth there are challenges to the area school systems. Wake County is projected have 7,000 more students this fall than last year and over the next five years the projections call for a total of 40,000 additional students.

As I wrote in a blog several days ago, one approach to address this issue of rapid growth was to make a number of elementary schools follow a year round schedule. The Wake County School system staff has developed a list of 30 elementary schools to be considered for year round schedules. By instituting a year round schedule more students can be accommodated in any one school building.

Yesterday the Wake County Schools board narrowed the list to 23. The public now has a comment period until August 28 when a public hearing will be held at the Southeast Raleigh High School. You can see the list of schools that are being considered and read more about the plan on the Wake County Public School system website:Â 23 Wake County NC Schools

If you are currently living in the Triangle area of North Carolina, you are aware of the rapid growth of Wake County. The Wake County population is expected to grow this year by more than 25,000 people. This may be considered a good thing because of the expanding tax base, but there are problems that go along with this growth. One of the largest is how to handle the increasing number of students in the Raleigh area school systems.

As one approach to address the issue, the Wake County School system staff has developed a list of 30 elementary schools to be considered for year round schedules. By instituting a year round schedule more students can be accommodated in any one school building.

The list of elementary schools being considered was made public yesterday on the Wake County Public School System website and it was the front page headline on today’s News and Observer.

Not all of the schools will immediately have a year round schedule, but depending upon the results of a bond issue this fall, more may need to added. You can see the list of schools that are being considered and read all about it on the Wake County Public School system website:Â 30 Wake County Schools

The Raleigh, NC area has become a very desirable place to live. We traditionally have had lower unemployment than the rest of North Carolina and the country as a whole. We have good schools, colleges and universities and there are a large number of College graduates in the area.Â

All of this good news for Raleigh, NC has produced rapid growth and the area school systems are straining to keep up. It continues to be a very hot topic of discussion on how the Raleigh School systems can build and pay for the schools needed to keep up with our population growth.

In general, Wake County has excellent schools and there are over 100 schools that have about 13,000 teachers and staff. There are a wide variety of magnet schools programs that offer innovative approaches to learning. Entry in the various programs is by lottery.

Johnson County Schools rank in the top 20% of school districts in NC. There are 36 schools in Johnson County with 27,500 students.
